WHAT’S A THERAPEUTIC DIET?
A diet ordered by the physician as part of the treatment for a specific disease is a Therapeutic Diet. It is usually a modification of a regular diet, and has to be tailor-made for everyone.
THERAPEUTIC DIET TO LOWER SODIUM (salt) : For those who suffer from abnormally high Blood Pressure or Kidney disease or there’s accumulation of fluid around the lungs, this diet can work wonders.
A healthy diet should include no more than 2300mgs of sodium daily. So, one needs to eat less salt if one suffers from any of the conditions mentioned above.
HOW TO REDUCE SODIUM IN DIET
- Choose fresh fruits & vegetables instead of the frozen ones.
- Skip ‘frozen’ vegetables. They are known to have high sodium content.
- Use fresh meats in place of packaged ones
- Read food labels for sodium content before buying
- Avoid soups & pickles or cured meats
- Avoid table salt, garlic salt, seasoning salt, and meat tenderizers
- Substitute salt for fresh garlic, onion powder, black pepper, lemon juice or seasonings like parsley, thyme, rosemary, oregano & vinegar.
